The Skin Barrier, Explained
The barrier is skin's quiet workhorse. Here's how it works, and why supporting it changes how skin looks.

Imagine a brick wall: the skin cells are the bricks, and the lipids between them are the mortar. That wall is the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of skin, and the part skincare touches first.
When the mortar is healthy, water stays in and irritants struggle to get through. Skin looks smooth, calm and comfortable. When it is compromised, moisture escapes, and skin can look dull, feel tight, and react easily.
Why barrier care is longevity care
Almost every visible sign of skin ageing is worse on a weakened barrier. Hydration evaporates faster, fine lines look deeper, and texture appears rougher. Supporting the barrier is therefore the most fundamental step in any routine.
- Cleanse gently — over-cleansing strips the lipids skin needs.
- Moisturize consistently — lipids and humectants work together.
- Protect daily — environmental stress accelerates barrier wear.
